The next European Commission: statement by Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič

President-elect Juncker and Maroš Šefčovič

I am delighted and honoured to have been asked by President-elect Juncker to take on the role of Commission Vice-President for Energy Union.

A secure and sustainable energy supply for Europe is a vital element in the EU's number one priority to stimulate economic growth and competitiveness, jobs and investment and I look forward to rising to the challenge of coordinating the Commission's work to develop a truly EU-wide energy union.

My focus will be on reducing Europe's dependency on energy imports through stimulating the development of alternative energy sources and supplies and completing the single market for energy by connecting national energy supply networks.

Ensuring that the EU continues to play a world-leading role in energy research and in promoting the shift to a low-carbon economy will also be my leading priorities.

Should I be accepted in this new role by the European Parliament, I will work closely with the Commissioners for Climate Action and Energy, Transport, Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, Environment, Regional Policy, Research, Science and Innovation,  Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Agriculture and Rural Development, as well as with Vice-President Katainen responsible for Jobs and Growth, to ensure the necessary coordination of ideas and solutions to meet the EU's policy goals.
