Newsletter XVI - An emergency early warning system for the Krakatoa volcano in Indonesia, based on the JRC’s IDSL devices

On 22nd December 2018, at 13:56 UTC, a tsunami was generated by the collapse of the Anak Krakatau volcano, with waves propagating in all directions within the Sunda Strait, the stretch of sea between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra. The volcano had been particularly active since June 2018, even if no stronger eruption occurred at the time of the tsunami event. The volcano-triggered tsunami reportedly caused over 430 fatalities and extensive damage along coastal areas of the Sunda Strait.

The 2nd European Drought Observatory (EDO) User Meeting was held on 11-12 October 2018 at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy. I was delighted to be recently appointed to head the Joint Research Centre (JRC) unit that manages and coordinates the Commission’s Disaster Risk Management Knowledge Centre (DRMKC). An Open Public Consultation is being carried out via the EU platform “EU Survey”, which aims at collecting as many views as possible on how the EU’s Water Framework Directive and Floods Directive have respectively brought about changes to the sustainable management of water and improvement in the state of water bodies, and to the strategies to reduce the risk of flooding across the EU.
