Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen attended the G5 Sahel Summit in Mauritania today, highlighting the EU’s sustained commitment to the stabilisation and recovery of the region.
The European Union will invest €20 million in rural development in Uzbekistan. €10 million will be spent on developing job skills in rural areas. €5 million will protect severely climate-affected communities of the Aral Sea region. Another €5 million will contribute to improving the country’s trade and policy environment.

One Acre Fund distributes crucial farm inputs, like seed and fertilizer, on credit to smallholder farmers across rural East and Southern Africa with more than 800,000 clients today and plans to serve at least 1.2 million by 2020.
During his first official visit to the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica reconfirmed the EU's commitment to working with the country's government to support sustainable development, especially in rural areas. On this occasion, Commissioner Mimica also launched two new programmes on nutrition and sustainable growth.
Today, the European Commission has announced a €59 million support programme to boost rural development in Tajikistan. Agriculture contributes to about one quarter of the country’s GDP and close to three quarters of the population live in rural areas. Yet the rural economy suffers from structural challenges, notably in the areas of natural resource management and business activity.
