Comparison of four Faecal Immunochemical Tests (FIT)

Faecal immunochemical (FIT) tests can detect very small amounts of human blood in stool. Colorectal cancer screening programs around the world use FIT tests, as they are non-invasive and inexpensive. The quantitative FIT tests provide a numerical result and this result is considered positive when the value is above a certain threshold. Various FIT tests are available on the market and these tests might not give comparable numerical results.

Together with several experts from the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) Working group on FIT, the JRC researchers have performed a study which confirms and quantifies the significant difference between numerical results of the four FIT systems. This variation between the FIT systems is currently reflected in the use of different thresholds in the screening programs.

The results of the study also indicate that the availability of a suitable reference material could enhance the result comparability and facilitate the use of common thresholds, reduce health-care costs, improve clinical management and lower the risk of clinical error.
