The participants at the meeting of the Regional Food Crisis Prevention and Management Mechanism (PREGEC) in the Sahel and West Africa, held June 27-28, 2019 in Bamako, Mali, have published an avis on the food security and nutrition situation during the lean season (June - August) and the prospects of the 2019-2020 agro-pastoral campaign in the Sahel and West Africa.
They observe that , thanks to the good agricultural production of the 2018/2019 season and the availability of food products on the markets, food prices are generally stable at the beginning of the lean season.
However, markets remain severely disrupted in areas affected by civil insecurity. Similarly, in most countries of the West Basin, particularly those affected by inflation such as Liberia and Sierra Leone, staple food prices are largely above their five-year average. This situation negatively affects the livelihoods and access of poor households to staple foods.
