United to end child labour in agriculture

To mark the World Day Against Child Labour, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DEVCO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) are jointly organising a conference followed by an interactive workshop with the title ‘United to end child labour in agriculture’.

  • Nearly half of the 152 million child labourers are engaged in the worst forms of child labour. 71% of all child workers are found in agriculture.
  • Key factors contributing to child labour in rural areas are low family income, household poverty and lack of organisation of farm workers and small producers.
  • The UN Sustainable Development Goal 8, Target 7, calls for ‘immediate and effective measures to … secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour … and by 2025 end child labour in all its forms’.
