The most recent edition of the JRC Newsletter has been published and can be downloaded here.

This issue features an editorial on the research priorities of the Italian Presidency of the Council of EU, written by Stefania Giannini, Minister of Education, Universities and Research. Ms Giannini emphasises the importance of speeding up the full implementation of the European Research Area and extending the concept of a common research area to the Mediterranean.

The cover story focuses on JRC’s scientific support to EU policies for smart and sustainable growth that respects the environment. It presents JRC studies, tools and data analyses on smart specialisation, ICT R&D investments, education and energy, as well as on material efficiency of products, sustainable use of resources and industrial emissions.

The publication also brings news on employment increase in the ICT sector, the economic impact of EU’s energy and climate goals for 2030, and China’s advance to a global leader in photovoltaic installations in 2013.

In the section "Meet the Scientist", Michaela Saisana, coordinator of the composite Indicator Research Group (COIN-team) in the JRC, talks about the turbulent growth of composite indicators  and their increasing use in EU policy making.
