BIOEASTsUP supports the BIOEAST initiative and aim to boost knowledge and innovation-based bioeconomies in the Central and Eastern European CEE countries. The Newsletter informs about the current developments in the project, the BIOEAST Initiative and the partner countries.

 
Transboundary impacts: systematic and systemic analysis for evidence-based policies implementing the UN 2030 Agenda in a more resilient society - Call for Papers

A call for papers is launched to collect contributions on good practices, methods, indicators, and data to identify and manage transboundary impacts. The selected papers will be published in a report focusing on the role of OECD Policy Coherence for Sustainable Development framework to support countries in managing the post COVID-19 by coping with Transboundary impacts and long term effects within a sustainable development context in a more resilient society.

 
Agriculture and bioeconomy: EIB approves €700 million of financing under the Investment Plan for Europe to support private investment across the EU

New financing targets investments by private cooperatives and companies in the agriculture and bioeconomy sector. The EIB programme loan will amount to €700 million and is expected to back close to €1.6 billion of investment across Europe. Financing is guaranteed by the European fund for strategic investments (EFSI) and will help make the sector more resilient in light of Covid-19.

 
Fungi-Inspired Companies Fill a New Niche in Sustainability

Fungi are now being transformed into durable and sustainable materials for outerwear, packaging, skincare, and, of course, incorporated into delicious, nutritious meals. A biotech company is focusing on the root structure of mushrooms—known as mycelium—to build these materials through a process known as biofabrication.

 
Building a lemon bioeconomy with green technology

Researchers from the National Research Council in Palermo, Italy have applied green chemistry technologies to open the route to a broader and richer economy for lemons, well beyond its conventional markets.

 
New online platform connects crop and food producers to biorefineries

EU-funded project Agrimax has launched an innovative new online service which enables crop producers, food processers and agricultural cooperatives to sell their waste as feedstock for two biorefineries: one in Spain and one in Italy. This will help maximise the EU’s sustainability while providing new biobased compounds for the chemicals, food-packaging and agricultural sectors.

Six new factsheets focused on Torrefied Pellets, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil –HVO, Pyrolysis Oil, Bioenergy in Europe, Bioenergy in Slovenia and Biofuels in Bulgaria have recently been published.

 
A novel biofuel system for hydrogen production from biomass

A novel technology has been developed for hydrogen production from the process, which involves electron that is produced during the decomposition of biomass such as waste wood. The result produced after biomass decomposition is a high value-added compound, and it is a two-stone technology that improves the efficiency of hydrogen production.

 
EU mobilizes economic toolbox to reach sustainability

The EU wants to deliver on the global challenges which are defined in the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. To do so it will integrate the SDG objectives into what is called the European Semester - an annual review of EU member states fiscal books. They pay special attention to economic and employment questions.
