FAO unveils platform to help accelerate action on reducing food loss and waste

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) today unveiled a comprehensive platform to help the global community step up action to reduce food loss and waste as the UN agency and partners call for increased efforts and gear up for the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste - to be marked for the first time on 29 September 2020.

 
Mass Balance accounting is here. The next step is a new standard

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), has started work to establish a globally recognized mass balance standard for the industry. The new standard will help to drive real change, supporting the development of recycled and renewable raw materials, and the production processes needed.

 
BIC'S position paper on bio-based industries role on EU's Green Deal Recovery

Published the Action Plan for the Implementation of the Italian Bioeconomy Strategy BIT II

The National Bioeconomy Coordination Group (NBCG) of the Presidency of Council of Ministers has published the Implementation Action Plan (2020-2025) for the Italian Bioeconomy Strategy BIT II. It includes, among others, a series of relevant targeted actions which have been clustered into four main topics: policy/standards, pilot actions, regeneration of ecosystem services and stakeholders engagement, and showcases concrete projects and examples of Bioeconomy investments which can act as catalyst of socio-economic growth.

The potential of bio waste in Europe

Dutch agency advises the Netherlands to phase out bioenergy

The Dutch Social Economic Council (SER) in July advised the Dutch government to phase out bioenergy and instead use biomass for high value applications, according to a report filed with the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service’s Global Agricultural Information Network.

 
Updates from the Bioeconomy Pilot: new demo-case and contributions to the Green Deal

The latest updates from the Vanguard Initiative's Bioeconomy Pilot includes the launch of a new demo-case on biopolymers production. Through support from the Technical Assistance Facility (TAF), the Bioeconomy Pilot's demo-case on advanced and sustainable biofuels will also be able to strengthen its work on sustainable mobility, which is in line with the European Green Deal.

 
Why shrimps are being turned into batteries to store renewable energy

A recent project led by Spanish researchers, along with help from scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has come up with an innovative new material with which to make batteries used for storing renewable energy. By extracting ‘chitin’ from the shell of a shrimp, scientists can produce electrodes to form vanadium flow batteries.
