The European Commission announces today €140 million of funding for the countries affected by the Ebola virus in West Africa: Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria.
The new package will help those countries bolster their health services (for example through reinforcing treatment centres or support for health workers), both during the crisis and in the recovery phase.

It will also provide support in the areas of food security, water and sanitation, which are essential for safeguarding the health of the population. The rest will be used to reinforce governments’ capacity to deliver public services and will provide mobile laboratories for the detection of the virus and training of health workers.
The European Commission has reacted to the Ebola epidemic from its onset. It is active with humanitarian aid, expertise and international coordination. The Commission has allocated EUR 11.9 million to the epidemic response, supporting the World Health Organisation, Doctors without Borders and the Red Cross. It has deployed humanitarian experts, including specialists in hazardous diseases, to the affected region. Two mobile laboratories funded by the European Commission are already operating on the ground. The Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Centre is monitoring the situation and is ready to coordinate the distribution of in-kind European assistance to the affected region.
