€140 million released to support development in Guinea

The European Commission has released almost €140 million to finance five development projects for the Republic of Guinea. Following inclusive and peaceful elections held on 28 September 2013, the European Union was able to resume full cooperation with the country and release the funds from the 10th EDF (European Development Fund) (2008‑2013).

The funds will be used to support the Government's efforts in promoting good governance, protecting human rights and improving mobility and road infrastructure.

EU confirms its support for development of Central Africa

EU Commissioner for Development, Andris Piebalgs is going to announce close to €3 billion in grants for countries and organisations in the region of Central Africa (including ten countries) for the period 2014-2020. The announcement will be made during a more than two-day event to discuss development cooperation with Ministers and other authorities of the involved countries and regional organisations.

Four years on from the Haiti earthquake: The EU’s response

On 12 January 2010, Haiti was struck by a devastating earthquake that took 222,750 people's lives, injured many thousands and made 1.7 million homeless.  Since day one, the European Union has responded to the needs of the Haitian population; providing both immediate humanitarian relief on a massive scale, while boosting its development aid. To this day, EU action has helped to save lives, provide shelter, food and health services, rebuild roads, schools and hospitals and support the Haitian authorities in the reconstruction process.

Commissioner Piebalgs to stress the need to fight poverty while ensuring sustainable development at the anniversary of a think tank on development research

Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs will participate in a symposium that celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Foundation for Study and Research in International Development (FERDI), an independent European think tank for development policy research. The event, held in France, has as the overall theme "Sustainable development, vulnerable development”.
