Commissioners Tonio Borg and Andris Piebalgs re-affirm their commitment to fighting HIV

On the occasion of World AIDS Day on December 1, Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, Tonio Borg, and Commissioner for Development, Andris Piebalgs, stated: " We re-affirm our commitment to fighting the HIV epidemic which continues to cause much suffering to people in Europe and around the world. We have made considerable progress in fighting HIV/AIDs but numbers are still alarming.   Worldwide more than 34 million people live with HIV/AIDS. Only in 2011 in the European Union and European Economic Area countries, over 28 000 people were newly infected with HIV/AIDS.

New EU support for Mozambique to fight hunger and chronic malnutrition

The European Commission announced today new €67.3 million support for Mozambique to reduce hunger and chronic malnutrition and accelerate progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The new programme will help improve agricultural and fisheries production and increase access to food for vulnerable groups, in particular women and children.

Last year's High Level Forum at Busan was a big step forward on the aid effectiveness agenda, and reports like this are very helpful in keeping this issue in the spotlight.

EU Development Commissioner Piebalgs announced this week that the EU will support the construction of what will be the largest African photovoltaic power plant, in Burkina Faso. It will provide 32 gigawatt hours per year, the equivalent of 6% of the country's current electricity production.
