Guinea-Bissau: Commission proposes opening of consultations because of failure to respect democratic principles

The Commission today proposed to the Member States the opening of consultations with Guinea-Bissau. This initiative, which is based on Article 96 of the Cotonou Agreement, concluded between the EU and 76 African, Caribbean and Pacific countries, reflects concern about the situation in Guinea-Bissau in terms of respect for democratic principles and the rule of law. The decision also indicates a willingness to put in place a strategy to end the crisis together with the various parties involved. The proposal to open consultations will be examined by the 27 EU Member States before consultations begin.

Commissioner Piebalgs and EU Development Ministers met in Brussels

During the Development Council meeting the participants discussed the situation in Haiti, Afghanistan and mutual accountability and transparency between European donors and partner countries. The Ministers also shared their views on the Commission's Green Paper on “EU development policy in support of inclusive growth and sustainable development".

Three Latvian humanitarian workers liberated in Darfur

Commissioners Piebalgs and Georgieva said: We welcome the liberation of Captain Artjoms Nalbandjans, co-pilot Janis Gindra and mechanic Kaspars Reihlers, who had been taken hostage in Darfur, Sudan, while working for the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS). The release of the three humanitarian workers came as a great relief for the EU and for Latvia.

World AIDS Day 2010: European Commission tops €1.3 billion invested in the fight against AIDS in the world

To fight AIDS on a global scale, EU Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs recently announced a 10% increase in contributions to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), to which the EU is already the largest donor, providing 52% of resources. The increase would allow the Commission to contribute around €1.3 billion over the period 2002-2013.
