Global hunger event: European Commission to reach at least 7 million malnourished children with its development programmes by 2025

Global Hunger Event

Commissioner Piebalgs announced this new commitment during the Global Hunger Event in London. You can find his speech on here.

The event, co-hosted by UK Prime Minster, David Cameron and Brazilian Vice President Michel Temer, aimed at scaling-up political commitment to put nutrition at the top of the global development agenda. This high-level meeting brought together the double Olympic gold medal winner Mo Farah, representatives from governments, the UN system, civil society and the private sector.

The European Commission will remain committed to improve food and nutrition security in the world and help to reduce the number of malnourished children:

  1. The European Commission invests  at least 800 million euro in agriculture and food security a year
  2. To help achieving the Millennium Development Goals related to hunger and child mortality, the European Commission has allocated 225 million euro through its MDG Initiative.
  3. The European Commission will continue to support the Scaling-Up Nutrition Movement to create innovative solutions to undernutrition.
  4. Commissioner Piebalgs also pledged today to step up investments in research for nutrition by supporting projects such as Harvest Plus to develop biofortified crops rich in nutrients and resilient to drought.

Around 170 million children in the world suffer from stunting and 3 million children die every year due to food insecurity, poor health and inappropriate child care. For more information see also: http://ec.europa.eu/europeaid/what/food-security/documents/food-security_fact_sheet_2012_en.pdf
