Commission supports the Global Fund on its way to reform and improving efficiency

The Board of the Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and Malaria has adopted recommendations for major reforms made by an independent panel. The European Commission strongly supported this decision in the Board (of which the Commission is a member).

Commissioner Piebalgs made the following comment on the outcome: "Earlier this year, I put the 2011 contribution (€ 130 Million) to the Fund on hold. Now, the independent report has confirmed that the problems at the Global Fund are significant and that there is no short-term fix that could fully address shortcomings occurred in the past. On the other hand, the report confirms that our efforts through the Fund has ensured the survival of millions of individuals, and the Board has taken the necessary and decisive action recommended by the panel, instructing the Fund's Executive Director to present his "Transformation Plan" to the November Board meeting. It is on that basis and at that moment that I will make my decision on whether to go ahead with the 2011 disbursement".
