Commissioner for Development Piebalgs met in New York representatives from NGOs and a delegation from the European Parliament to discuss on food security

Last 31 st March, Commissioner for Development Piebalgs met in New York representatives from NGOs and a delegation from the European Parliament to discuss on food security. The meeting took place in the frame of the Conference 'Towards a new future for Haiti', which is considered a pilot case for developing a successful food security policy.

Piebalgs stressed that the world is nearing the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the Millennium Declaration and there are many countries where progress is 'off-track'. In 2010, over a billion people are considered to be food insecure. To help tackling this situation, the European Commission adopted two communications on Food security, enhancing the productivity of smallholder farmers and the resilience of rural communities. On the same day, the Commisison also adopted some proposals to strengthen EU's role in Global Health to help Developing countries to meet the 2 Millenium Development Goals related to Health: maternal health and children mortality. These are the MDG which are most off-track in most developing countries, so we need to act urgently. Global health.
