Crowd technology for gathering information on marine ecosystems developed in Italy

Launched in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the Marine Data Crowdsourcing (MadCrow) project has developed technology for the acquisition, integration and dissemination of marine ecosystem data. MadCrow is based on a citizen scientist concept in which boat owners allow project infrastructure to be fitted to their vessels to monitor physical, chemical and biological parameters of the sea, such as temperature, salinity, acidity and oxygen levels.

Helping Danish SMEs find ways to exploit ‘big data’

SMEs based in Denmark’s Central Jutland and Capital regions have found new ways to exploit the huge amounts of data they generate. The Innovative Use of Big Data project provided 26 companies from a variety of industrial sectors with access to some of the country’s leading researchers in data processing and visualisation. Many of the companies involved in this ERDF-backed project have developed practical products and solutions which will boost their competitiveness.

Boosting Croatia’s and Serbia’s stake in automotive computing

The DRIVE project boosted job growth in the cross-border area of Croatia and Serbia by improving the European and international competitiveness of the region’s workforce and modernising infrastructure in fields at the intersection of the automotive industry and ICT sector. The project was set up to tackle regional issues such as lack of job opportunities and the resulting exodus of educated professionals in search of better pay or work.

A cross-border project brought together local authorities, businesses and schools from Greece and the Republic of North Macedonia to improve the energy efficiency of a number of public buildings. The ENPOL-EE project is also raising awareness among local people and organisations about energy use and protecting the environment.

Interreg project Area 21 brings a unique approach to building renovation in the Baltic Sea Region

Area 21 set out to achieve energy efficiencies in buildings in the six partner countries with the use of energy improvement districts (EIDs). By involving citizens and other concerned parties, and bringing energy planning to district level, the project departed from the approach of energy planning being carried out mainly at EU and national level. The collaborative, bottom-up model developed by the project can be replicated throughout the Baltic Sea Region.

Energy research and innovation hub in Flanders shapes Europe’s low-carbon future

A collaboration between four Belgian research institutions has been transformed into an energy research, development and innovation hub in the Flanders region. The project Towards a Sustainable Energy Supply in Cities, has financed state-of-the-art facilities, a large-scale living lab and research for energy technologies and services at the EnergyVille site, at the Thor Park industry incubator. Working with local communities and businesses, the hub has developed innovations and shared knowledge to accelerate Europe’s transition to a carbon-free society.

Interreg makes public buildings in the Mediterranean region more energy efficient with Green Public Procurement

The Interreg GRASPINNO project helped public authorities in seven Mediterranean countries make their buildings more energy efficient with Green Public Procurement (GPP) processes. To encourage the growth of the market for ‘green’ products and services, SMEs received help in submitting tender bids. An average energy saving of 10 % was achieved by 13 pilot projects carried out in 28 buildings. The project was part efforts to create ‘smart cities’ that employ technology to improve services for residents and increase the use of sustainability criteria in public tenders.
