Going with the flow: Remote hydrological monitoring on Zante

On the island of Zante, one of the Ionian Islands, the supply of drinking water is centrally controlled by the Intermunicipal Water Distribution Association, of which all the districts of the island are members. This centralised network, which covers 70% of the island, supplies the districts, which then distribute water to private homes via the municipal distribution systems. However, up to now the Association has not had the technical capacity to either cope with the various operational problems (pump breakdowns, pressure drops, leaking pipes, and so on) or to optimise management of the island’s water.

Setting the scene

ISPA, PHARE, SAPARD... For a number of years now, northern Podlaskie has benefited from Community programmes. These programmes are helping to improve infrastructure, the environment, business competitiveness and the quality of life of the inhabitants of this region, which lies on the Union's new eastern border. At the same time however, the experience of EU programme implementation has served to familiarise the actors and decision-makers of this region with Community practices and procedures.

Around the Baltic, a palette of regions to paint the future

Like the many colours on a painter's palette, the central Baltic Sea is surrounded by ten regions belonging to five countries: the regions of Stockholm-Malär in Sweden, Häme and the Aland islands, South West Finland and Helsinki, the city of Saint Petersburg and the region of Leningrad in Russia, the city of Tallinn and the region of Harju in Estonia, and finally the region of Riga in Latvia. These are ten regions with a tremendous potential for development, given their economic fabric, human resources, dynamic metropolitan areas, tourist and cultural attractions and geographical position as a hub at the heart of the Baltic transnational area. This favourable context corresponds to a period of rapid changes marked by more and more international trade, the opening of the European Union to Eastern Europe and the swift development of the "information society".
