Steven Fries

Chief Economist, Shell International B.V.

Steven Fries is Chief Economist at Royal Dutch Shell, where he is responsible for advising senior management and the board on global macroeconomic and financial developments and on energy market and environmental policy issues that affect the group’s operations.

Prior to joining Shell, he held various senior positions at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), including Deputy Chief Economist and Director of Research. Dr. Fries began his professional career as an economist at the International Monetary Fund.

Dr. Fries earned a D.Phil. in economics from the University of Oxford after gaining an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He has published widely on energy and climate policy, financial reform and development, and the post-communist economic transition in Eastern Europe. He is also the current Chairman of the British Institute of Energy Economics and was a part-time visiting professor in the economics department of the University of Oxford.
