Stephanie Flanders has been the BBC's economics editor since April 2008. Before that, she was Newsnight's economics editor since October 2002.

From 1997 to 2001, she worked as a speechwriter and senior advisor to the US Treasury Secretary, Larry Summers, where she was involved in managing the emerging market crises of the late '90s. She also worked as a reporter for the New York Times, and as principal editor of the UN's 2002 Human Development Report.

Before heading off to America, she was a leader writer and economics columnist with the FT in London, and worked as an economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies and the London Business School.

Stephanie gained a first class degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Balliol College, Oxford, and later spent two years as a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard, studying international economics and development as well as US politics.

Stephanie was named Broadcast Journalist of the Year at the 2005 Workworld Media Awards and was elected to the governing council of the Royal Economic Society in April 2007.
