Ewald Nowotny

Governor, Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB).

Ewald Nowotny has been Governor of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (Austrian Central Bank) since September 2008. In this capacity, he is a member of the Governing Council and the General Council of the European Central Bank, and he represents the Bank in the meetings of central bank governors at the Bank for International Settlements and at the International Monetary Fund.

Before assuming his current position, Mr. Nowotny was Chief Executive Officer of BAWAG P.S.K. (2006–2007), served as Vice-President and member of the Executive Board of the European Investment Bank (1999–2003), and was first a member and later President of the Governing Board of the Österreichische Postsparkasse (1971–1979). Mr. Nowotny was a member of the General Council of the OeNB (2007–2008) before being appointed governor, and served on the supervisory boards of several banks and corporations.

Mr. Nowotny holds a PhD in law from the University of Vienna, a doctorate in general and public economics from the University of Linz, and an honorary doctorate in social and economic sciences from the University of Klagenfurt.
