Connie Hedegaard

European Commissioner for Climate Action.

Connie Hedegaard is a member of the Barroso II Commission. Her appointment as Commissioner for Climate Action took effect on 11 February 2010.

Ms. Hedegaard previously filled various positions in the Danish government from 2004 to 2009, serving first as Minister for the Environment (2004-2007) and for Nordic Cooperation (2005-2007), then as Minister of Climate and Energy (2007-2009) and Minister for The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (2009). In 2008-2009 she was also a member of the Danish Government’s Coordination Committee, and a Member of Parliament from 1984 to 1990 and from 2005 to 2009.

Before becoming a member of the Danish government, Ms. Hedegaard worked as a journalist for different Danish media, including newspapers, radio, and TV, between 1990 and 2004. From 1998 to 2004 she was anchor at the current affairs magazine Deadline on DR2 and before that she was head of the news bulletin service for Radioavisen.

Ms. Hedegaard holds a master’s degree in Literature and History from the University of Copenhagen, and has been awarded several press prizes, including the National Press Club of Denmark Award (Publicistprisen) in 2003.

On 10 March 2010, Connie Hedegaard was also awarded the "Vanebryderprisen (habit-breaking prize) 2010” by the Danish consulting company Habitmanager, for her outstanding commitment, sustained efforts and significant achievements in fighting to change the energy and environment habits of individuals and of the world as a whole.
