Elena Salgado

Second Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, Spain.

Elena Salgado was appointed Minister of Economy and Finance, and Second Deputy Prime Minister of Spain in April 2009. She had previously been Health Minister from 2004 to 2007 and Public Administration Minister from 2007 to 2009.

Ms. Salgado started her career in public administration as director of the Department of Studies in the Enterprise Ministry's SME Institute. She then moved to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, where she was Director-General from 1985 to 1991, and the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Environment, where she was Secretary-General of Communications from 1991 to 1996.

Between 1997 and 2004 she held different positions in the private sector as director of Lenci Consulting, managing director of Vallermoso Telecom, chairwoman of 11811 Nueva Información Telefónica, and member of the board of directors of Abertis Telecom.

A graduate of Industrial Engineering and Economic Science, Ms. Salgado holds a master's degree in quantitative management methods.
