Road transport
Infrastructure, equipment, traffic, enterprises, and economic performance
The following information is available in the database:
- length of motorways and other roads
- fleet of motor vehicles and new vehicle registrations
- investment and maintenance in road infrastructure
- number of passengers and passenger-kilometres by bus, including motor coaches, trolleybuses, and minibuses
- road traffic performed in a national territory by vehicles registered in any country or performed in any country by vehicles registered in a particular country.
The voluntary data collection ‘Eurostat / ITF / UNECE common questionnaire on inland transport statistics’ supplements the road freight survey.
Data are collected annually.
Data are published approximately 12 months after the end of the reference year. If needed, data are revised 3 months after the first release.
Freight transport
The following information is available in the database:
- total road freight transport
- national road freight transport
- international road freight transport (goods loaded/unloaded in the reporting country and cross-trade)
- cabotage road freight transport.
Eurostat also publishes an annual indicator on territorialised road freight transport, which shows transport performance in a country of trucks registered in any other EU country.
Road freight transport is available in tonnes transported and in other units, such as tonne-kilometres, vehicle-kilometres, and number of journeys performed.
Since 1999, road freight transport statistics are collected via national surveys. Countries provide data for road trucks registered in the own country. These data cover truck movements in the country’s territory and all over Europe.
Data are reported by 26 EU countries. Malta is exempted from reporting road freight transport statistics. In addition, Norway, Switzerland and – since 2022 – Montenegro and North Macedonia transmit data.
Quarterly data are transmitted to Eurostat within 5 months after the end of each quarter.
Quarterly data are published in the database approximately 7 months after the end of the reference quarter.
Annual data are published approximately 7 months after the end of the reference year.
Light utility vehicles
The ongoing project on transport by light utility vehicles collects harmonised data on the distance travelled (by purpose) and on tonnes and tonne-kilometre of freight transported. The data are not yet published.
