Many service areas continued to recover in the fourth quarter of 2021, following the severe hit due to the COVID-19 crisis and subsequent containment measures in the spring of 2020.
Service turnover in the EU fell by 27% between the pre-pandemic fourth quarter of 2019 and the second quarter of 2020. However, service turnover was 7% higher in the last quarter of 2021 compared with the last quarter of 2019 (calendar-adjusted data).

When comparing the fourth quarter of 2021 with the fourth quarter of 2019, ‘information and communication’ and ‘transportation and storage’ saw a particularly strong recovery (both around +14%).
On the other hand, turnover in tourism (e.g. hotels, air transport and reservation services) remained below the pre-pandemic levels (-27%).
