Statement of Vice-President M. Šefčovič on the EFSF approval by the Slovak Parliament

13/10/2011

Today´s vote by the Slovak Parliament on the EFSF has sent a strong signal to partners in the EU that Slovakia takes its membership of the European Union and euro area very seriously, with a great sense of responsibility, and fully respects all its commitments. The preservation of financial stability in the euro area is in the interest of all citizens of euro countries, including the Slovak people.

This important decision is a clear response to all the criticisms made against Slovakia recently. In the coming days, the European Union will have to approve a series of important decisions in order to sort out the current currency crisis.

I hope Slovakia will continue in this vein, and confirm its image as a fair and credible European partner.
