Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič meets Mercedes Bresso, President of the Committee of the Regions

On Wednesday, 30th June, Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič met Mercedes Bresso, the recently elected President of the Committee of the Regions. Mr Šefčovič underlined the importance of close working relations between the EU institutions if the maximum benefits are to be gained from the changes brought by the Lisbon Treaty. Regions have a crucial role to play in helping Europe recover from the economic crisis and in implementing the Europe 2020 strategy, and the Vice-President expressed the Commission's willingness to call on the Committee's expertise.

Establishment of the European External Action Service

Maroš Šefčovič, European Commission Vice-President for Inter-institutional relations and administration, welcomed the political agreement reached on 21st June in Madrid on the establishment of the European External Action Service. Vice-President Šefčovič represented the Commission at the decisive talks, held between the Spanish presidency of the Council of the EU, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs, the Commission and the European Parliament.  The agreement paves the way for the EEAS, established by the Lisbon Treaty, to give the EU a more dynamic and consistent foreign policy, under the leadership of High Representative/Vice President Catherine Ashton.

Statement by Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič on the Council agreement on the European Citizens' Initiative

I welcome the highly satisfactory agreement reached today by the Council on the European Citizens' Initiative. This should allow us to move forward rapidly in negotiations with the European Parliament on this important new instrument for participatory democracy. I'd like to thank the Spanish Presidency for its excellent work in finding a compromise and to thank the Member States for their constructive attitude. For the Commission, it was very important to maintain the approach in our original proposal on examining the admissibility of initiatives.

Maroš Šefčovič, European Commission Vice-President for Inter-institutional relations and Administration, visited Warsaw today as part of his programme of visits to EU Member State capitals. In a debate in the Polish Senate, Mr Šefčovič presented the Commission's Work Programme for 2010 and highlighted the importance of the Europe 2020 strategy to help the EU make a sustainable recovery from the economic crisis.
