The second successful European Citizens' Initiative, One of Us, was submitted to the European Commission on 28 February after validation of its signatures of support by all Member State authorities. Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič welcomed the submission.
After 18 months of intense negotiations, the Council and the European Parliament finally reached a broad agreement on a Commission proposal to increase the visibility, recognition, effectiveness, transparency and accountability of European political parties on 26 February. The move paves the way for a more pan-European campaign in the next European elections in 2019.
As Europeans get ready to vote next May, national politicians have a key role in encouraging them to take part in the elections and to better understand the real benefits of the European Union. Speaking to national parliamentarians in Romania on 10 February, Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič urged them to take up the challenge to show citizens the real added-value benefits of the EU, and encourage them to vote to protect them.
