Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič in Poland to present Commission's 2010 Work Programme and discuss EU's post-Lisbon Treaty institutional set-up
Maroš Šefčovič, European Commission Vice-President for Inter-institutional relations and Administration, visited Warsaw today as part of his programme of visits to EU Member State capitals. In a debate in the Polish Senate, Mr Šefčovič presented the Commission's Work Programme for 2010 and highlighted the importance of the Europe 2020 strategy to help the EU make a sustainable recovery from the economic crisis.
In the afternoon, he took part in a meeting of the EU affairs committee of the Sejm. Here, the Vice-President underlined that national parliaments were among the winners from the Lisbon Treaty, having a much enhanced role in EU decision-making through the so-called 'subsidiarity check' mechanism. He held bilateral talks with Speaker of the Senate Bogdan Borusewicz, Deputy Speaker of the Sejm, Stefan Niesiolowski and Secretary of State for EU affairs, Mikolaj Dowgielewicz. Vice-President Šefčovič briefed his interlocutors on the Commission's personnel policy and its efforts to ensure that Poland and other recently-joined Member States reach their targets in terms of staff numbers at all levels of the European Commission.
