Methodology
The article on disability statistics explains the background to the rights of people with disabilities, outlines various models of disability, and presents some of the issues related to measuring disability for statistical purposes.
The implementing guidelines for the global activity limitation indicator (GALI) provide the methodology (definitions and concepts) and practical guidelines for the implementation of the variable, which is used as the main measure of disability at EU level.
Data sources
Data on disability statistics come from the following data collections:
The following data from EU-SILC are used:
- disability prevalence: data on disability using the concept of long-standing limitations in usual activities due to a health problem
- annual data on adults and 3-yearly data on children
- 3-yearly data on disability defined as difficulties in functioning in basic actions
- situation of persons with disabilities related to poverty, social inclusion, living conditions, access to healthcare services, leisure and social participation, health status and determinants, and overall experience of life: annual data or collected every 3 or 6 years via modules.
