Retour European Statistical Recovery Dashboard: June edition

17 June 2022

Today, Eurostat released the June edition of the interactive European Statistical Recovery Dashboard.

The dashboard contains monthly and quarterly indicators from a number of statistical areas relevant for tracking the economic and social recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, across countries and time.

The June edition features an adjustment with the quarterly services turnover and monthly accommodation and food services turnover being replaced with monthly production in services.

June highlights: EU industrial production rebounds mildly while inflation rises to a new record high level and excess mortality increases

  • Following the EU economy’s expansion in Q1 2022, industrial production bounced back whereas retail trade dropped in April 2022, while inflation soared to a new record high level in May 2022. The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has added to global supply chain disruption and triggered a surge in energy and commodity prices.
  • This month, the recovery dashboard has been improved to include one new monthly business indicator on production in services, replacing “quarterly services turnover” and “monthly accommodation and food services turnover”. When compared to its pre-pandemic level in February 2020, EU production in services was 7.8% up in March 2022, indicating a much faster recovery than industrial production, which was only 1.6% up in the same month.
  • EU economic sentiment fell for the third month in a row in May 2022, dropping further below its pre-pandemic level. This decrease was due to weaker confidence among industry managers and, to a lesser degree, consumers. Services, retail trade and construction confidence remained virtually unchanged.
  • As regards the EU labour market and population, in April 2022 the unemployment rate was stable, remaining below its pre-pandemic level, while the excess mortality rate rose.
