Maroš Šefčovič takes part in the open Conference of Presidents at the European Parliament

Speaking at the European Parliament's Open Conference of Presidents this afternoon, Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič told political group leaders and other MEPs that the Commission has done everything in its power to assist Cyprus and work towards a constructive solution.

While the programme for assistance agreed by other Member States and Cyprus in the Eurogroup was not accepted by the Cypriot parliament, the Commission continues to work hard in order to find a solution, he added.

Vice-President Šefčovič said: "Our experts are in the country. We continue to believe that a solution can be found, but we need full co-operation from the Cypriot authorities. The alternative is bankruptcy and financial losses for Cypriot citizens. We want to avoid that, and contribute to the solution."

The debate, which European Council President Herman van Rompuy also attended, covered the outcome of the Spring European Council as well as the situation in Cyprus.

The opening statement is available on Rapid: SPEECH/13/247
