EU funding has enabled the construction of a wind farm at Strzałkowo, a town of around 5 000 inhabitants in the Wielkopolskie region of north-western Poland. The wind farm has a total capacity – the maximum amount of power that it is able to produce – of 4 megawatts (MW). Individually, the two wind turbines of which the facility consists, each have a capacity of 2 MW and a maximum height of 160 m above sea level.

Sfântu Gheorghe, in the Centru region of Romania, is implementing a strategy to reduce road traffic and greenhouse gas emissions under an EU-funded project. Based on the city’s sustainable urban mobility plan, the strategy is composed of a series of integrated and complementary actions. They encourage walking and cycling and improve public transport infrastructure and equipment to develop a modern and efficient network, which people will want to use. This should lead to a shift from private cars to more sustainable means of transport.
roBetter infrastructure for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists is promoting sustainable urban mobility in Alba Iulia, in the Centre region of Romania. Based on a municipal plan, the project aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions from motorised road transport in the area by 3.5 %, enhancing residents’ quality of life. In all, 14.5 km of footpath, 8.5 km of public transport lane are being upgraded, 9.5 km of cycle path are being laid and a bike-sharing system is under development.
roStargard, a city of some 70 000 people in the Zachodniopomorskie region of north-western Poland, is the site of an EU-funded project under which four geothermal wells were drilled. The wells have a total energy generation capacity of 12 megawatts. In addition, a high-performance pumping system and all necessary connections linking the energy source, the wells and the grid were set up. As a result, production of heat from renewable geothermal energy in Stargard increased by almost 100% – from around 200 000 to 400 000 gigajoules a year.
plEU funding has contributed to the construction of a 22 km section of the S7 expressway from the municipality of Orońsko in Mazovia province, central Poland, to the border with Świętokrzyskie province to the south. The road forms part of the Trans-European Transport Network's Baltic-Adriatic corridor and also forms a section of European route E77, which runs from Kaliningrad to Budapest via Gdańsk, Warsaw and Kraków.
plPhase two of an EU-funded project will complete the renovation of 66 km of the network in Poland’s Mazowieckie region to remove bottlenecks, increase the frequency of trains and make rail travel more appealing to commuters and freight transporters.
plA programme upgrading the railway line linking Kelenföld station in Hungary’s capital, Budapest with the city of Székesfehérvár, the seat of Fejér County and capital of the Central Transdanubia region, is being completed with the help of European Union co-financing. The project is the second phase of a two-stage modernisation plan to increase train speeds and freight capacity on the line, while reducing journey times.
huFunding from the EU has made it possible to carry out the second phase of the development of three sections of Hungary’s M85 and M86 motorways. The roads link the cities of Szombathely and Győr in the Western Transdanubia region and also create a bypass around the town of Csorna.
huThe European Union has invested more than EUR 432 million – out of a total cost of nearly EUR 749 million – in the extension of Warsaw’s metro line 2. As well as giving Poland’s capital six new metro stations, the project includes the installation of technical facilities at the existing Kabaty station, the purchase of 13 new trains and preparatory work for an additional extension to the line.
plThe Racibórz Dolny flood protection reservoir – which is being built with support from European Union co-financing – aims to provide protection from flooding by the River Oder for 1.3 million inhabitants in the most important settlements in the Śląskie, Dolnośląskie and Opolskie regions of southern and south-western Poland. The reservoir has a surface area of 24 km² and a storage capacity of 185 million m³.
