How to download datasets
Please note that there are different ways to download Eurostat data:
- in the Data Browser
- via the data navigation tree
- in the bulk download section
- automatically by means of the API (Application Programming Interface)
Please note that this page only covers the download via the Data Browser and the data navigation tree. To know more about the bulk download and API functionalities, please click on the links provided above in the bullet list.
Data Browser
Click on the download button located to the right-side of the data display section
This will open a pop-up with several options for you to re-fine your choice:
You have 3 different sections to make: select data, select format, and options. In addition, you have the advanced settings button.
Please note: some options are interdependent, meaning they can only be selected by you if a certain other option is chosen. For example, the option to download the full dataset is only available if SDMX-CSV or TSV format is chosen.
Select data
By default the option 'Only displayed dimensions' is selected. This means that you will only download those data for which the dimensions are visible in the current data layout under either row or column. To see which dimensions are displayed in the row and column, please have a look at the data selection panel.
For example, looking at the example of the data selection panel below, you would download the following data:
- geopolitical entity: 46 countries (located in the row)
- time: 10 periods (located in the column)
- unit of measure: current prices, million euro (located in the dimension)
- national accounts indicator: gross domestic product at market prices (located in the dimension)
However, you might have other positions selected in the dimensions, for example not just the unit 'current prices, million euro', but also 'percentage of EU27'. As this is not visible in the current table view – as the 'unit of measurement' is not located under row or column – data for this unit will not be downloaded when the setting 'Only displayed dimensions' is selected.
You can then either move this under the row or column in the table layout or you can select the option 'All selected dimensions'. In this case, all positions that you have selected for any dimension, whether or not visible, will be downloaded. Please also read our information on how to customise the data selection and the layout.
The option 'Full dataset' is only available for download in SDMX-CSV and TSV format. This will download the complete dataset with all its dimensions and positions, regardless what is chosen in the data selection panel.
Select format
Spreadsheet (.xlsx) is chosen as the default download format. For more information, please consult our chapter on which formats are available. If none of these formats are convenient for you, please click on the 'Advanced settings' to explore more options.
Options
By default, flags will be included in your download. If you do not want to include them, please click on the box to deactivate the download of flags. Please note that this setting will not be stored and you will need to deactivate it for every download you do.
The option 'Compress file' is only available if SDMX-CSV and TSV format is selected under 'Select format'. The option 'Apply my settings' is available when you are logged in to your account.
Advanced settings
In the advanced setting, you can customise your download even further by defining options, depending on the file format you chose. When you open these settings, the default presentation looks as following:
In the top heading row, you can select the following:
- type selection: data, data structure, or code lists
- file format: for example spreadsheet, text, SDMX, or JSON-STAT; the available options depend on what is selected under 'type selection', see also our information on available formats
- data scope: the available options here depend on what is selected under 'file format', see also our information on options available for each format.
Data navigation tree
In the data navigation tree, you can click on the download icon, that is the arrow pointing down , which is located in front of each dataset title.
The available formats are spreadsheet (.xlsx), SDMX 2.1 and TSV.
