In 2019, at EU level, even though enterprises from the industry sector only made up about 15% of the total number of importing enterprises, industry’s share in the value of imports was 47% - the highest among the 3 categories in 2019. It was the same for exports; the enterprises forming part of the industry sector accounted for 73% of the value of exports, although they only represented 27% of the total number of exporting enterprises.

Regarding enterprises from the wholesale and retail trade sector, their share in the number of importing enterprises and their share in the value of imports were relatively similar (38% and 44%, respectively). For exports, enterprises from wholesale and retail trade had the highest share in number of enterprises (42%), but they accounted for only 21% of the value of exports.

The largest share of exporting enterprises were part of the wholesale and retail trade sector (42% of the total number of enterprises). However, their share declined slowly over time. On the other hand, the share of ‘other’ enterprises increased over the same period.
