In these times of COVID-19, it is interesting to know how much is being spent on healthcare. The most recent statistics on current healthcare expenditure (public and private) show how this varies across EU Member States.
On average in the EU, healthcare expenditure amounted to 9.9% of GDP in 2018. Among the EU Member States, the largest shares were recorded in Germany (11.5% of GDP) and France (11.3%), followed by Sweden (10.9%).
In contrast, the lowest shares of healthcare expenditure were recorded in Luxembourg (5.3% of GDP) and Romania (5.6%).

Relative to population size, healthcare expenditure was highest among the EU Member States in Denmark (€5 260 per inhabitant), Luxembourg (€5 220) and Sweden (€5 040) in 2018, while it was lowest in Romania (€580) and Bulgaria (€590).

- ‘Current healthcare expenditure’quantifies the economic resources dedicated to health functions, excluding capital investment. Healthcare expenditure is primarily concerned with healthcare goods and services that are consumed by resident units, irrespective of where that consumption takes place (it may be in the rest of the world) or who is paying for it. As such, exports of healthcare goods and services (to non-resident units) are excluded, whereas imports of healthcare goods and services for final use are included.
