In 2021, the EU median age was 44.1 years, up from 43.9 in 2020. Most capital regions in the EU had relatively young populations, although, the outermost French region of Mayotte had, by far, the lowest median age (17.7 years), followed by Guyane (26.3 years).

There were 8 regions in the EU with a median age of at least 50 years in 2021: the eastern German regions of Chemnitz, Sachsen-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg and Thüringen, as well as Liguria and Friuli-Venezia Giulia in Italy, and Principado de Asturias in Spain.

The blue circles represent regions with a median age below the EU average (44.1 years) and orange circles represent regions with a median age equal to or above the EU average. Based on Eurostat’s population projections ‘EUROPOP2019’, the highest median ages among NUTS level 2 regions in 2050 are projected for the Spanish regions of Principado de Asturias (59.1 years) and Castilla y León (57.9 years) and the lowest are projected for the French regions of Mayotte (21.1 years) and Guyane (30.6 years).
