Legislation
Eurostat collects its demographic and population data from national statistical institutes. They each have their own traditional methodology on collecting, compiling and processing these statistics. It is important to set down common basic standards for concepts, definitions, and breakdowns when it comes to collecting and publishing the data coming from different countries, as well as calculating meaningful and fit-for-purpose EU aggregates and demographic indicators.
The legislation below ensures that European demographic statistics provide adequate information for all EU members to monitor EU actions in the field of demography, population stocks and balance.
