Les citoyens de l’Union européenne ont financièrement beaucoup à perdre en achetant des produits de contrefaçon. Il s’agit aussi d’une question éthique. Ce commerce illégal profite en grande partie au crime organisé. Partout dans le monde, le crime organisé est largement impliqué dans la distribution de produits de contrefaçon: pour ces criminels, c'est une réelle possibilité de développer leurs activités.
Ces produits peuvent également constituer une grave menace pour la sécurité et la santé. Pourquoi des escrocs se soucieraient-ils de votre sécurité? Les citoyens sont également perdants en tant que consommateurs. Ce qui semble à première vue être une bonne affaire se révèle souvent une perte d’argent, les produits contrefaits n'étant pas fabriqués selon les mêmes normes de qualité.
Nous sommes tous perdants en tant que contribuables. Les opérateurs illégaux et les trafiquants n'acquittant pas d'impôts, nous devons payer plus pour compenser cette perte. Les pratiques de contrefaçon nuisent à l'économie européenne car elles portent atteinte aux activités commerciales légitimes et freinent l'innovation.
Les produits contrefaits concurrencent de manière déloyale les produits authentiques et menacent ainsi de nombreux emplois en Europe. Pour contrer ce risque, il n’y a qu’une chose à faire:

On 27 January 2014, in Rome, the European Commission Vice-President Tajani and the President of the Italian Senate, Pietro Grasso took the floor together with high representatives from Institutions, industry, traders and consumers associations and national authorities involved in the fight against fake goods.
During the conference, representatives from different Member States gave evidence of their efforts to fight counterfeiting, as well as of the impact of the European Commission "Stop fakes" awareness campaign in their country.
