Eurostat is pleased to announce that the final report on the third round of the European Statistical System (ESS) peer reviews was adopted on 15 May 2024 by the European Commission (SWD(2024)136) and is now publicly available on Eurostat’s dedicated web page.

The report presents a summary of the results from the third round of ESS peer reviews, which had the following two objectives:

  • to review the compliance/alignment of the ESS with the European Code of Practice (ES CoP), to demonstrate to the ESS and to external stakeholders that the ESS is a system based on the principles of the ES CoP; and
  • to help National Statistical Institutes, other national authorities developing, producing and disseminating European statistics, and Eurostat to further improve and develop the national statistical systems/Eurostat by indicating future-oriented recommendations that would also encourage government authorities to support their implementation.

The report has been endorsed by the European Statistical System Committee in its meeting of February 2024 and was sent to the European Parliament and the Council.

Peer reviews strengthen statistical systems at national and European levels thereby increasing the relevance, trustworthiness and credibility of European statistics and enabling the ESS to address future challenges. This round of ESS peer reviews has produced many useful findings for NSIs, ONAs, Eurostat and the ESS. It demonstrated that adherence to the ES CoP is very high, and it generated recommendations that will help the ESS members to improve.

For each of the 32 ESS members, a peer review report is published on Eurostat’s dedicated web page. They will be accompanied by improvement action plans.
