Back Farm to fork: new publication on the European food chain

15 December 2021

Eurostat released today “Key figures on the European food chain”, a new publication focusing on the EU’s farm to fork chain.

Key figures on the European food chain” starts with an overview of the structural aspects of farming as well as primary agricultural and fisheries production, and then moves on to the processing, trade, distribution and consumption of food and beverages. The publication concludes with a chapter on environmental issues related to some of the stages of the food chain. It presents key messages for the EU, and highlights the main players and key specialisations, accompanying analysis with intuitive visualisations and innovative data presentations.

The data showcased in this publication generally cover datasets and statistics for 2019 or 2020, the main exception being the structural data on farms that will next be updated with the results of the Agricultural Census 2020. An added point of interest is the asymmetric impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in some stages of the food chain.

This new publication responds to interest in the European Commission’s Farm to Fork Strategy, which is an integral part of the new European Green Deal that sets out to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050.
