In 2021, extra-EU imports of COVID-19 vaccines amounted to €7.8 billion, while extra-EU exports amounted to €20.1 billion. Extra-EU imports of COVID-19 vaccines came predominantly from Switzerland (65%) and the United States (29%). On the other hand, extra-EU exports went predominantly to Japan (21%), the United Kingdom (14%) and South Korea (6%).

The largest exporters (combined intra and extra-EU) of COVID-19 vaccines among the EU Member States were Belgium (61% of the EU total), Germany (21%) and Spain (11%). Germany (30% of the EU total), Spain (21%) and Belgium (14%) were also the largest importers (combined intra and extra-EU) of COVID-19 vaccines among EU Member States in 2021.
