The European Commission has proposed to update the rules that coordinate social security systems in Europe. Under the current rules, Member States pay family benefits to entitled EU mobile citizens without restriction or deduction, including in relation to a child living in a different Member State. The Commission proposes to keep this rule, as it ensures the best link between the contributions you pay and the benefits you receive. To ensure fairness and prevent double payments, however, special rules are in place in case family benefits from more than one Member State overlap.Moving and working in another EU country is a fundamental right of all EU citizens.Free movement of people would not be possible without EU rules on coordination of social security.
