Lithuania makes its apartment buildings more energy efficient

Owners of apartment buildings in Lithuania are being encouraged to modernise their properties to make them more energy efficient. Aimed at buildings with low energy efficiency levels, the EU-funded project should reduce their energy use for heating by at least 40 %. In all, 1 400 apartment blocks are expected to be modernised with the support.

Significant upgrades to Hungary’s railway lines

The second phase of a project to improve Hungary’s Budapest to Békéscsaba dual-track railway line and rail sections of Trans-European Transport Network corridors running through Hungary will be completed in November 2017. The importance of the Budapest to Békéscsaba line in terms of passenger and goods transport means that the project will benefit both domestic and international traffic.

Centre for medical device research set up in Galway

CÚRAM, the Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Research in Medical Devices based at the National University of Ireland in Galway, was established in 2015 with help from EU funding. It comprises a cooperation network of academic, clinical and industry partners, including 24 Irish and multinational companies. These bring together a range of perspectives to develop medical devices and implants, as well as cell, drug and device combination products which address unmet clinical needs, particularly for chronic illness.

Crèche Altaïr: a new nursery in Schaerbeek, Brussels, provides a vital resource for working parents

Crèche Altaïr is a 49-bed nursery built in the commune of Schaerbeek, Brussels, that opened its doors on 2 November 2021. Construction started in September 2019. Located at the intersection of the Général Eenens Road and Avenue Voltaire, the facility responds to a pressing need for childcare facilities in the commune, giving parents the peace of mind knowing that their children are well taken care of while they go to work.

Top marks for Estonia’s energy-neutral school

Combining innovation with education, a public secondary school building in the small Estonian town of Pölva offers 67 courses and can teach up to 272 students. But, unlike most secondary schools, this one boasts something quite special – the school is almost completely energy neutral, thanks to the EU-funded project ‘Construction of gymnasium of Pölva’.
