Researchers from the EU-funded research project HELiCoiD have developed hyper-spectral imaging technologies which can help distinguish more accurately between healthy tissue and that affected by tumour. The prototype hyper-spectral camera has been tested during brain cancer surgery at Negrín Hospital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in Spain. This non-invasive technology can provide more detailed information allowing real-time identification of healthy and affected tissue during brain surgery.

The European Commission will invest almost €16 billion in research and innovation in the next two years under Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation funding scheme, following a new work programme for 2016-17 adopted on 13 October. The work programme is now available on the participant portal.
Carlos Moedas, Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation said: "Research and innovation are the engines of Europe's progress and vital to addressing today's new pressing challenges like immigration, climate change, clean energy and healthy societies. Over the next two years, €16 billion from Horizon 2020 will support Europe's top scientific efforts, making the difference to citizens' lives."

FARSEEING aimed to focus on the issue of promoting healthy, independent living for older adults. More specifically, it aimed at better prediction, identification and prevention of falls with a focus on ICT devices and the unique proactive opportunities they can provide to older adults to support them in their own environment. Key to this was the falls repository (real-world falls) and a broad range of technologies which include the use of smartphone, smarthome, wearable sensors and exergames.
The main goal of WIISEL is to develop a flexible research tool to collect and analyze gait data from real users and correlate parameters related with the risk of falls from the elderly population. The WIISEL system can be useful as a research tool for studying fall risk and as a clinical tool for long-term monitoring of fall risk in the home and community setting.
The project ENRICHME “Enabling Robot and assisted living environment for Independent Care and Health Monitoring of the Elderly“, funded by the Horizon 2020 programme, is a pioneering project in that it will be testing technologies for supporting elderly people with Mild Cognitive Impairments in the long-term and in their living environment.
