Early in February, Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) successfully deployed the Mont-Blanc prototype. After three years of intensive research effort, the team installed a two-rack prototype which is now available to the Mont-Blanc consortium partners. It is the first time that a large HPC system based on mobile embedded technology has been deployed and made fully operational to a scientific community.

The Partnership For Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) Annual Report 2014 is the third issue of the yearly highlight in the work of the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe.

Launched in October 2013,the EU funded Graphene Flagship has now been sailing for a little over a year. Much has been achieved in this short time, yet we are only a tenth of the way on a voyage that we hope will take graphene and related materials from academic laboratories into society. The following pages highlight some of the flagship’s science and technology achievements to date.

The IoT Week originated in the IoT European Research Cluster (IERC) and has become the pre-eminent event in Europe attracting industry and research from around the world to showcase and discuss the Internet of Things of today and of the future. IoT Week 2015 is devoted to creation of ecosystems, partnerships and value chains across the domains to ensure rapid deployment of interoperable and replicable IoT solutions.

First Innovative Enterprise week “Access to Finance for Research, Innovation and SMEs 2015” is a 3-day international conference on:

• the political answer to the macroeconomic situation
• ways to boost growth, jobs and competitiveness through innovation, including the investment Plan for the EU
• how the financial instruments, facilities and accompanying measures launched under Horizon 2020 can enhance access to finance for research, innovation and SMEs

End of 2014 the first Horizon 2020 projects were signed. Since then almost four thousand more have been added.

As announced by President Juncker on 13 May 2015, the European Commission intends to set up a new Scientific Advice Mechanism ("SAM"). The mechanism will support the Commission with high-quality, timely and independent scientific advice for its policy-making activities.

A Science and Technology Options Assessment (STOA) workshop in the European Parliament is going to explore such questions.

The Science and Technology Options Assessment (STOA) bureau of the European Parliament explored Graphene and other 2D materials in a workshop called "From Nobel Prize to technology, innovation and industrial competitiveness. Questions raised during the workshop ranged from: " why are these materials so special?" to "will the Graphene Flagship project allow Europe to take the driving seat in these technologies, and turn them into growth and jobs?".

The main goals of the second European Exascale Software Initiative (EESI2) were to elaborate an evolutive European vision and roadmap and to propose recommendations to address the challenges of Extreme Data and Extreme Computing on the new generation of Exascale computers expected in 2020.

The V4 countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia ) have issued a common position for a Digital Single Market based on digital economy and cyber security. If the V4 countries want to deal with these challenges then they need to support the research and innovation activities in this area as well as improve the business environment.

The report of the event consolidates the discussions held throughout the 2-day event and is organised in a clear set of actions that the European Commission will explore jointly with interested stakeholders in 2015-2016.

The European Exascale projects organize a European Exascale workshop addressing especially industry, together with PRACEdays15.

Elderly people with walking difficulties are often intimidated by busy public places. This led an EU research project to develop a robot walker to guide them around shopping centres, museums and other public buildings, thus enhancing their autonomy.

The first Horizon 2020 FET Open grant agreement has been signed, following the first cut-off of the call for proposals opened in 2014. The ULTRAQCL project proposes a new technology for ultrafast and intense light pulse generation and is the first of many more to come.
