Arctic station network boosts climate change research

EU-funded project INTERACT has built a network of Arctic research stations, allowing them to coordinate and share resources more efficiently. The network aims to boost the scope and quantity of research on the Arctic, which serves as a bellwether of global changes to climate, biodiversity and land use.

A wider circle for European polar research

The polar regions are often seen as a barometer for the health of the global environment, and understanding how changes in this area affect Europe and the world had become essential. An alliance of 22 research institutes has therefore set out to enhance the integration of European capabilities for polar research and maximise the benefits to society.

Mapping the quality of Europe's inland waters

Regular monitoring of lakes and rivers is essential for both good water quality and a healthy ecology. An EU-funded project has used satellite imagery to create high-resolution mapping services to help countries better manage their inland waters.

Results of ongoing EU funded pre-commercial procurements (PCPs)

Interesting data is available about the results of ongoing PCPs funded by FP7. Data shows first impacts on opening the market for new players, creating cross-border growth opportunities for companies, bringing research results to the market and contribution to growth and job creation in Europe.

130M euro of EU funding for innovation procurement in 2016-17 - don't miss the open PCP call

H2020 provides 130M euro funding for innovation procurements in 2016-17 across several areas: Research Infrastructures, ICT, Health, Security, Energy, Transport, Space and Climate Change/Environment.

Get ready to submit your proposal to the next call: the "open" PCP call (deadline 12 April 2016). It finances 90% of the coordination and procurements costs for pre-commercial procurements (PCP) in "any" domain of public interest that requires ICT based solutions.

A platform to help develop Africa's mineral wealth

Africa is a treasure trove for mineral resources, but many go under-exploited. This could change with a pan-African online portal providing geological information on the continent's mineral wealth. Devised by EU-funded researchers, the future portal is now being developed further to help African countries exploit their resources in a sustainable way.

Open consultation on the next FET Proactive Horizon 2020 Work Programme

Do you have a great idea for a future technology, far beyond what is currently possible? Could it become real if Europe's best minds were put on the task? Share your views and contribute to the identification of the themes of tomorrow's FET Proactive programme. The consultation is open until 30 April 2016.

FET-Open: Second cut-off projects have started

The second cut-off of the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Open call on 31 March 2015 resulted in 14 new projects retained for funding, 11 of them for Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) and three for Coordination and Support Actions (CSA).

Commission seeks views on research partnership in the Mediterranean

The European Commission has opened a public consultation on a new research and innovation initiative for sustainable food production and improved water management in the Mediterranean area. PRIMA, the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area, will involve both EU and non-EU Mediterranean states. It will reinforce international cooperation in research and innovation to address the food and water-related challenges that are critical to the region's sustainable development.

Understanding climate change in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean and neighbouring countries are a climate change hotspot, the climate research community believes. Projections suggest water availability is highly likely to fall, while demand will rise. The EU-funded CLIWASEC project cluster studied climate change impacts on water and security, and helped prepare Europe and its neighbours for the challenges ahead with guidance on water efficiency and stakeholder involvement.

A central role for marginalised communities

In the battle against climate change, more funding is being directed to preserving the planet's forests and wilderness regions - often home to marginalised Indigenous peoples. Project COBRA is showing how their skills and experience can help make these vital conservation efforts more successful, with the UN Development Programme keeping a close eye.

A lesson in ocean literacy

The SEA CHANGE project aims to encourage citizens to take direct and sustainable action to protect healthy and biodiverse seas by increasing their ocean literacy – defined as an understanding of the ocean’s influence on a person and that person’s impact on the ocean.

Investing in European success - A Decade of Success in Earth Observation Research and Innovation

Earth observation data and information are vital to allow decision-makers and society in general to take informed decisions about climate, energy, food security, natural hazards, health and other societal challenges. These challenges are complex, interrelated, cross-border in nature and interdependent at the global scale and therefore coordination is essential to avoid duplication of efforts and reduce observational gaps.

EUROGEOSS - Untangling the science Web

People can now access millions of scientific data resources about our planet thanks to the EUROGEOSS project. EUROGEOSS (‘European approach to the global Earth observation system of systems’), backed under the Environment Theme of the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) to the tune of EUR 6.1 million, has developed an innovative way to search thousands of Earth observation catalogues.
