Nijmegen’s “passionate vision” wins Green Capital 2018

The Netherlands’ oldest city, Nijmegen, is this year’s European Green Capital, with “a passionate, clear and persuasive vision”, according to the judges of this prestigious competition. Exemplary policies in climate adaptation, cycling, waste and water management, and deep citizen involvement make Nijmegen “a true ambassador for change”, says Joanna Drake, Deputy Director-General of the Commission’s DG Environment.

EMAS and the COP23

For the first time, the climate change conference has been organised in compliance with EMAS, meaning that the organisers have looked at all aspects of its environmental impact such as energy and resource consumption, legal compliance and stakeholder engagement.

Local Events

On 21 May 2015, the six winners of the second edition of the Natura 2000 Award were awarded with their prizes at a high profile ceremony in Brussels. Since then, the winners have organised (or are in the process of organising) events in their own Member States – with support from the Award Secretariat.

Award Benchmarking

Annual Benchmarking Reports are drawn-up by the Award Secretariat, presenting an analysis of the most successful applications from each year. Their aim is to support the exchange of good practice and to provide applicants with ideas. It is recommended that potential applicants for the 2017 Award consult the reports to inspire their applications.

Applying to the Natura 2000 Award

The Award website provides detailed information on the application process which should be read carefully by all potential applicants. Applicants must consider how to best present their achievements, as these will then be assessed by the evaluators, jury and the public.
