The Netherlands’ oldest city, Nijmegen, is this year’s European Green Capital, with “a passionate, clear and persuasive vision”, according to the judges of this prestigious competition. Exemplary policies in climate adaptation, cycling, waste and water management, and deep citizen involvement make Nijmegen “a true ambassador for change”, says Joanna Drake, Deputy Director-General of the Commission’s DG Environment.
For the first time, the climate change conference has been organised in compliance with EMAS, meaning that the organisers have looked at all aspects of its environmental impact such as energy and resource consumption, legal compliance and stakeholder engagement.

2018 will be the European Year of Cultural Heritage. One of its central themes will focus on linking culture with nature. Everyone is encouraged to join in and organise a local event or a celebration to mark the occasion.
Following a thorough evaluation of the Birds and Habitats Directives, the European Commission adopted the Action Plan for nature, people and the economy in April to improve their implementation and boost their contribution towards reaching the EU's biodiversity targets for 2020.
On 21 May 2015, the six winners of the second edition of the Natura 2000 Award were awarded with their prizes at a high profile ceremony in Brussels. Since then, the winners have organised (or are in the process of organising) events in their own Member States – with support from the Award Secretariat.
Annual Benchmarking Reports are drawn-up by the Award Secretariat, presenting an analysis of the most successful applications from each year. Their aim is to support the exchange of good practice and to provide applicants with ideas. It is recommended that potential applicants for the 2017 Award consult the reports to inspire their applications.
The Award website provides detailed information on the application process which should be read carefully by all potential applicants. Applicants must consider how to best present their achievements, as these will then be assessed by the evaluators, jury and the public.
