What information can I find here?

This section gathers statistics from a range of other domains from which data is available broken down by age. In this context, young people are defined to be between 15 and 29 years old. For some indicators, data is available by age group, while for others it is presented by individual age.

The topics covered in this section are the following:

  • Population: for example the number of children and young people, young immigrants;
  • Education and training: participation education and training, early school leavers;
  • Employment: employment and unemployment rates, temporary and part-time employment;
  • Health: body mass index, psychological distress, self-perceived health;
  • Social inclusion: at risk of poverty or social exclusion, housing deprivation;
  • Culture and creativity: frequency of going to the cinema or concerts;
  • Participation: frequency of getting together with family and friends;
  • Volunteering: participation in informal voluntary activities;
  • Digital world: internet use and activities, e-skills.

Why are these statistics important and what is the European Commission doing in this regard?

Youth statistics play an important role in evaluating the progress toward the goals set in the EU Youth Strategy (2010-2018) which has 2 main objectives:

  • To provide more and equal opportunities for young people in education and the job market;
  • To encourage young people to actively participate in society.

The EU Youth Strategy proposes initiatives in different eight areas. To know more about this strategy, please see the website of the European Commission dedicated to 'Youth'
