Memoirs of Eurostat - Fifty years serving Europe - Products Statistical Books
The history of Eurostat written by two of its protagonists -- Alberto De Michelis and Alain Chantraine -- traces its way back to the origins of the organisation. Fifty years ago when it all started there were only seven pioneers. Today, Eurostat counts about seven hundred employees. The book describes the past: how did it happen; Eurostat's struggle to establish itself as a Directorate General; its ability to fulfil its mission to `provide the European Union with a high-quality statistical information service'; to animate the European statistical system and the establishment of a common statistical language; Eurostat's success to cope with the past enlargements and certainly with the future ones; its ability to organise an efficient network with the Member States and co-operation with international organisations. In penning this history, the authors provide all those involved in European statistics, at present or in the future, with the knowledge they need to implement new changes.
